Storage Security Tips

When shopping for a storage facility, assessing the security should be a prime consideration. Do not assume that all facilities will provide the same level and types of security. Here are some of the security issues to evaluate when giving consideration to a storage facility.

Perimeter Fencing

  • Solid fencing is more beneficial to criminals than to your security. Look for clear visibility that won't allow thieves a place to hide.
  • High security fencing should encompass the entire facility.

Entry Gates

  • Separate entry and exit lanes to prevent congestion.
  • Safety features to prevent the gates from closing on a vehicle
  • Alarm systems directly linked to law enforcement
  • Computerized key pad entry that provides reporting of who has entered and left through the gates.

Surveillance

  • Check position of video cameras. Do they cover the gate entrance? Are they fixed, or do they pan across the entire storage area?
  • Are the video cameras providing an ongoing record of the activity at the storage facility?

Unit Door Locks

  • If a thief should gain access to the facility, how secure are the individual units?
  • What rating do the unit pad locks carry? Pad locks are rated by the amount of time it can withstand attempts to break it. Class 1 equals one minute; Class 5 equals 5 minutes.
  • There are no locks that can withstand the use of bolt cutters, however, a disc lock will hinder the ability of the shackle to be cut. Disc locks should be your preference for a storage unit.

Crime Prevention

Ask storage facilities whether they have a formal crime prevention program or whether they participate in any of the crime prevention programs that are endorsed by law enforcement.

Storage Unit Alarm System

Are there individual door alarms on every unit? This should be a high priority when selecting your storage facility. Many facilities do not provide this individualized protection. Individual unit door alarms should be monitored in such a fashion that law enforcement is notified immediately when an alarm goes off.

Security Lighting

  • The best way to check a facility's lighting is to stop by at night. How well lit is it?
  • Dim lighting, especially in low traffic areas, can be an invitation for thieves.
